A vessel carrying 58,359 tonnes of wheat from the United States, the MV WAF Artemis, has anchored off Chittagong Port.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Food said the shipment was imported under a cash purchase agreement based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the interim government and the US.

Under the agreement, a total of 220,000 tonnes of wheat is scheduled for import.

This latest delivery marks the third shipment, following two earlier consignments totalling 114,093 tonnes.

The first shipment from the US arrived on Oct 25, carrying approximately 57,000 tonnes of wheat.

The second, of roughly equal quantity, reached Bangladesh on Jan 19. Unloading of the second shipment began on Monday via two lighterage vessels.

A ceremony was held at the Directorate General of Food’s silo jetty in Chattogram to mark the occasion, attended by the new US Ambassador Brent Christensen.

The MV WAF Artemis is currently positioned off Chittagong Port, awaiting unloading.

The MoU was signed in July last year to address trade deficits, and is set to remain in effect for five years.
