Egg prices have risen sharply in Dhaka’s retail markets within a week, with each egg now selling for Tk 13 and a set of four costing Tk 50.

A week ago, eggs were selling at a maximum of Tk 11 each. Traders are now charging Tk 140 per the dozen.

Visits to the Shonir Akhra, Jatrabari, Kaptan Bazar, and Segunbagicha kitchen markets on Friday showed most vegetable prices remained stable, though green papaya prices soared high.

Aubergine prices fell after weeks of hikes, while beef and cock chicken prices eased slightly.

Mohammad Rubel, a trader at Segunbagicha kitchen market, told bdnews24.com: “We sell a set of four eggs for Tk 48 to regular customers. A dozen costs Tk 140.”

Ashraful Islam, a trader at Jatrabari market, said eggs were selling at Tk 110 a dozen only 20 days ago.

“Egg prices usually remain low during summer. Chicken prices also fall. Farmers sell off chickens quickly to make room for new stock. Larger chickens die more often in hot weather, so farmers sell them in bulk,” he said.

The egg market saw similar volatility in late 2023 and 2024. Prices fell after the government allowed imports.

According to Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) data, eggs were selling at Tk 52 for four on Nov 1, 2023 in Dhaka markets. Prices later dropped after imports were approved.

Egg prices fell to Tk 40 per four in January 2024. Another round of increases came in September that year, prompting imports from India in an attempt to stabilise the market.

Even so, prices climbed to Tk 56 for four on Oct 1.

Prices eased again in early November following import decisions and gradually declined after imported eggs reached markets later that month.

Since then, egg prices fluctuated between Tk 40 and Tk 44 for four.

TCB data showed eggs were still selling at Tk 40 for four in Dhaka on Apr 7 this year. By the end of April, prices had risen to Tk 45 before climbing to Tk 50 now.

Aubergine Prices Fall, Papaya Remains High

Papaya was selling at Tk 80 to Tk 100 per kg at Shonir Akhra market on Friday, unchanged from the previous week.

Three weeks ago, it was selling at Tk 30 per kg.

Ridge gourd and sponge gourd were selling at Tk 80 per kg at the same market.

At Segunbagicha kitchen market, round aubergine was selling at Tk 100 per kg and long aubergine at Tk 80, down from Tk 140 and Tk 100 a week earlier.

Okra remained stable at Tk 40 to Tk 60 per kg, and tomatoes held steady between Tk 40 and Tk 50.

Bitter gourd prices at Jatrabari fell by Tk 40 to Tk 60 per kg. Pointed gourd at Kaptan Bazar dropped to Tk 60-70 from Tk 80 a week earlier.

Local cucumber prices shot up to Tk 100 per kg at Jatrabari from Tk 80 last week, while hybrid cucumber remained unchanged at Tk 70.

Green chilli prices remained steady across the three markets at Tk 60-70 per kg.

Larger local rohu increased to Tk 500 per kg from Tk 450 last week.

Tilapia remained at Tk 120 per kg, bata fish at Tk 250-300, sarputi at Tk 250 and silver carp at Tk 220.
