Robi Axiata PLC has expanded its safe drinking water initiative at railway stations, providing purified water to passengers at 10 major hubs across Bangladesh.

Under its “Nirapod Pani, Shustho Jibon” (Safe Water, Healthy Life) initiative, launched in 2011, Robi has installed water purification plants in partnership with Bangladesh Railway and WaterAid Bangladesh. The first facilities were set up at Kamalapur and Dhaka Airport stations.

The programme now covers stations in Chattogram, Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Mohanganj, Feni and Cumilla, supplying an estimated 1.2 million litres of drinking water daily.

Each installation is designed to serve more than 450,000 users a year, the company said in a media statement.

Robi said the facilities use membrane and ultraviolet filtration systems, with water quality tested regularly by institutions including BUET, CUET, KUET, SUST and the Public Works Department.

The stations also include separate access points for men and women, ramps for people with disabilities and designated ablution areas.

In 2025, the company extended the initiative beyond urban areas by building two water reservoirs in Wakchaku Para of Thanchi Upazila in Bandarban, in partnership with Give Bangladesh Foundation.

The gravity-fed system channels water from natural sources to serve local communities facing water scarcity.

Robi’s Chief Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Officer Shahed Alam said the company plans to expand the programme, particularly in areas with limited access to safe drinking water.
