Subhan verdict Wednesday

He has been charged with nine counts of crime like murder, genocide, abduction, torture and looting.

Police brought the Jamaat leader to the tribunal around 8:50am on Wednesday, when Jamaat and its closest ally BNP were enforcing a blockade programme, demanding snap polls under a neutral caretaker body.

Police said Subhan, who is also a former MP, was kept in the lockup in the ICT-2.

The tribunal, chaired by Justice Obaidul Hasan, is scheduled to announce the verdict after 10am.

Subhan stood trial on charges of committing crimes against humanity during the nation’s war of independence from Pakistan in 1971.

Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Muhammad Abdus Subhan has been brought to the Second International Crimes Tribunal for the pronouncement of the verdict on war crime charges against the Jamaat leader.

He was the chief of Jamaat’s Pabna unit and sat on the party's highest policymaking body during the post-Liberation War era.

He was the General Secretary and subsequently the Vice-President of 'Peace Committee' in Pabna during the 1971 war.

Subhan allegedly played a key role in setting up units of the Peace Committee across the district and forces like Razakar, Al Badr, Al Shams and Mujahid that were used to suppress the Bengali liberation struggle.

The Jamaat leader was arrested in a case of looting from Tangail on Sep 20, 2013. He was brought to Dhaka jail following a tribunal directive later.
