Dhaka, April 23 (BDNEWS) – PROSHIKA has so far developed 42 fish sanctuaries in 18 water bodies under eight upazilas in four districts ushering in a new horizon in sweet water fish cultivation in the country.
PROSHIKA achieved the breakthrough in sweet water fish cultivation in cooperation with the fisheries department of the government, World Fish Centre, the concerned stakeholders under the Community-based Fisheries Management (CBFM) under financial assistance from the Department For International Development (DFID, UK).
Under CBFM-2 PROSHIKA has already organised 7500 fishermen in and around the project areas. They were provided necessary logistic supports.
Management committees were formed comprising fishermen and other stockholders for each water body for successful management of the project.
The fish sanctuaries have been experimentally set up in Brahmanbaria, Nasirnagar, Nabinagar, Bhola Sadar, Khaliajuri in Netrokona, Bhairab, Kuliarchar and Mithamoin in Kishoreganj district.
PROSHIKA has so far allocated a credit of Tk 39 lakh under this project among 815 people to generate alternative income and employment opportunities.
PROSHIKA also organised different training courses for 1553 stakeholders in different region under CBFM-2 project.
