Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, an avid fan of the game, led the nation in congratulating the Tigers moments after their victory at Adelaide Oval in Monday’s Pool A match.
President Md Abdul Hamid and Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, too, lauded the team for their win.
Skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, donning the red-and-green national flag, dedicated the historic win to Bangladesh’s freedom fighters.
Mahmudullah Riyad’s century, the first for Bangladesh in the World Cup, helped the Tigers put up a challenging 275/7, batting first.
Prime Minister Hasina also congratulated Riyad, adjudged the Man of the Match for his 103-run knock.
She conveyed her greetings to the team, the manager, BCB officials, and all the die-hard fans, supporting Bangladesh from home and abroad, her press wing said.
President Hamid hoped the winning streak would continue.
“I hope Bangladesh will continue to play like this in their upcoming World Cup matches,” the president’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad quoted him as saying.
The Speaker in her message said the cricket team’s historic win was the victory of the entire nation.
“This victory will take Bangladesh cricket, in particular, and the nation in general to a new height,” she said.
Opposition Leader Raushon Ershad, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Finance Minister AMA Muhith, among others, also congratulated the Tigers.
The prime minister hoped the Tigers would continue to perform well.
She asked the team to continue to play “with the vigour and indomitable courage of the Royal Bengal Tiger” to keep Bangladesh’s red-and-green flag flying high in the World Cup.
