Dhaka, Feb 11 (bdnews24.com) - The Supreme Court Monday ordered the government to present an amended criminal procedure code in court by Wednesday—a key step in freeing the judiciary from the executive.
President Iajuddin Ahmed signed amendments to the CrPC to complete the process of carving out a free judiciary.
The plaintiff side in the case presented in court a comparative picture of inconsistencies between the verdict and the rules and regulations promulgated by the government. The matter will be heard on Wednesday.
"Today is a historic day. The judiciary has been separated today. From now on, the judiciary will be able to work without executive controls," the plaintiff of the case—Sirajganj district judge Masdar Hossain—told reporters.
The seven-member Appellate Division led by chief justice Syed JR Mudassir Hossain Monday held a hearing on the progress in implementing the verdict in the case.
The Supreme Court on February 1 granted the government 11 days to announce an amended CrPC.
The Supreme Court also adjourned hearing on the separation of the judiciary until February 12 after Additional Attorney General Abdur Rezzak filed an appeal seeking an extension of two weeks to announce the amended CrPC.
The Appellate Division on December 2, 1999 handed the government a total of 12 guidelines on separation of the judiciary from the executive.
