Chapai Nawabganj, July 26 (BDNEWS) – The long-felt demand of a full-fledged stadium of the people of Chapai Nawabganj is now uncertain for some mysterious reasons though a six crore taka has been allocated for construction of the stadium, sources said Tuesday.
The lone stadium is still in its age-old shape and condition though the touch of modernity is observed more or less everywhere in the district. Though the stadium was repaired after its appearance in 1960, the effort has never been taken to turn it into a full-fledged stadium.
The prime minister assured the people of the district to make it as a full-fledged stadium, and accordingly gave them hope of providing construction expenditure and acquiring land.
Initially over 10 acres of land at Rehaichar area adjacent to Mahananda Bridge had been allocated, as a full-fledged stadium cannot be built neither in the west due to the government college nor in the south due to the Newmarket, nor in the north-eastern corner due to the district commissioner's house and circuit house.
The purchasing cost of the land had been estimated at Tk 1, 07,50,000. The earth filling cost was estimated at Tk 50 lakh.
The district administration office sent a statement titled 'Stadium Construction Project of Chapai Nawabganj District' to the secretary of the ministry of youth and sports on January 27, 2004. After that the secretary of that ministry visited the spot in March this year, but to no avail.
The district sports association general secretary Golam Mostafa said, Tk 6.50 crore has been earmarked for the construction of the stadium.
