Dhaka, Sep 13 (bdnews24.com) — Flood situation may worsen in nine districts due to heavy rainfall and flash flood from northern hilly regions.
The flood affected districts are Kurigram, Sirajganj, Jamalpur, Rajbari, Faridpur, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Munshiganj and Manikganj.
A Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) bulletin said water level of Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Padma and Meghna would increase farther in the next one or two days.
On the other hand, water of the Ganges decreased.
The bulletin also said Sylhet's flood situation had improved.
In addition, at least 200 shrimp enclosures in Bagerhat had been washed away by Bhairab after a dyke collapsed.
At least 150 families of Radhaballav and Katua villages under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila were affected.
Water Development Board executive engineer of Bagerhat, Bazlur Rashid, said a stretch of about 20 metres of the dyke had collapsed on Friday midnight due to strong current from upstream.
Water level of Brahmaputra increased by 13cm and was flowing 27cm above the danger level.
Jamuna was flowing 19cm above danger level at Bahadurabad point, 33cm at Sirajganj and 8cm above danger level at Aricha.
Padma was flowing 47cm above danger level at Goalanda and 60cm above danger level at Bhagyakul.
On the other hand, water levels of Arialkhan, Kushiara and Surma fell at all points.
Around 200,000 people were affected by flood in at least two hundred shoals of Kurigram.
Thousands of hectares with standing crops including vegetable and aman paddy had also been submerged.
Kurigram WDB executive engineer Rezaul Mustafa Asafuddoula said water level of Dharala rose by 11cm, Brahmaputra by 13cm and of Dudhkumar by 9cm.
The flood affected areas of the district are Kaliralga, Jhunkarchar, Bhagabatirchar, Moshalerchar, Begumganj, Saheberalga, Chilmari, Ashtamirchar and Nayarhat under the Sadar Upazila and areas under Roumari, Ulipur and Rajibpur Upazila.
Jamalpur district's Parthashi, Kulkandi, Sapdhori, Noarpara, Belgacha, Islampur Sadar and Chinaduli Unions under Islampur Upazila, and Chukaibari and Chikajani Unions under Dewanganj Upazila were flooded as water level of Jamuna and Old Brahmaputra rose.
Croplands had been submerged in the affected areas.
Jamalpur WDB executive engineer A K M Shamsul Karim said new areas were being flooded with every passing hour.
At least 25,000 hectares of arable land in Madaripur district were submerged after a 150-metre stretch of Madaripur-Srinadi-Rajair road collapsed on Sunday due to strong current of Arialkhan River.
WDB executive engineer of the district Akhil Kumar Biswas said the board had nothing to do in this regard as the collapsed road was under Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED).
Madaripur LGED executive engineer Ashraful Islam said, "I've visited the area. I'll request the authorities to take appropriate steps."
People of hundreds of villages in Sirajganj were affected by flood as water level of Jamuna rose.
Around 500 metres of the flood protection dam and eight km of earthen ring dam were under threat due to strong current.
WDB executive engineer Sujoy Chakma said a Tk 2.98 billion proposal was submitted to the water resources ministry for protecting the river bank of Surma in Simla.
"That would protect the entire area," he added.
