A court has placed a travel ban on Aziz Ahmed, the former army chief, and his wife Dilshad Nahar Kakoli in connection with a graft case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Ash-shams Joglul Hossain issued the order on Thursday after considering an application from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The application was filed by the ACC to prevent the couple from leaving the country, according to the agency's lawyer Mahmud Hossain Jahangir.
The filing noted that Aziz and his family were under investigation for acquiring wealth beyond their declared income and laundering money to manage businesses and purchase properties in Malaysia, Singapore, and Dubai.
Aziz served as the chief of Army Staff from June 2018 until June 2021. Before that, he led the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) for four years starting in 2012.
At the end of his military career, he came under the scanner over allegations of corruption presented in an Al Jazeera report. However, Aziz denied all accusations.
On May 20, the United States banned Aziz and his family from entering the country following allegations of corruption and favouritism.
The ACC report accuses Aziz of abusing his authority for personal gain and corruption, including investing significant amounts of money to build luxury homes in and around the capital.
The graftbusters allege that he owns several properties, including houses in Mirpur DOHS and Aziz Residence in Dhaka's Nikunja.
Additionally, allegations have surfaced that his brothers, Haris Ahmed and Tofayel Ahmed Joseph, have bought multiple properties and large tracts of land in Dhaka.
