Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said the next general election will be held under a caretaker government, reaffirming the government's political commitment to restoring the system.
At the Secretariat on Thursday, shortly after the verdict on the 15th Amendment was announced, he confirmed the arrangement when asked directly.
"That's what will happen, Allah willing," he said.
He credited BNP's movement for the system's return, calling it a product of the party's struggle.
Asked whether the arrangement would be termed an interim or a caretaker government, Asaduzzaman said the ministry would weigh the verdict's provisions against what works best, adding that public opinion would be sought before a final call is made.
He said care would be taken to avoid any conflict with the court's ruling.
Once the verdict is received, a constitutional amendment committee will be formed to carry it into effect through the appropriate legal process, he added.
"The caretaker government system will be restored in the Constitution. This is our electoral and political commitment.”
Asaduzzaman also stressed the importance of implementing the July National Charter.
