The International Crimes Tribunal has set Jun 28 as the date for the verdict in the case of crimes against humanity in the shooting and killing of two people, including a youth hanging from the cornice of a building in Dhaka’s Rampura during the 2024 July Uprising.
The verdict date was set after the second round of arguments were completed at Tribunal-1 on Monday.
A three-member bench headed by Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder gave the order.
The other two members of the bench are Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and District and Sessions Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
Lawyer Sarwar Jahan Nipon presented arguments on behalf of prime suspect Chanchal Chandra Sarkar in the hearing. He claimed that his client had no involvement in the incident.
The prosecution's chief counsel Md Aminul Islam rejected the arguments of all five accused in the case, seeking their maximum punishment.
After arguments from both sides, the tribunal set a date for the verdict.
Of five suspects in the case, only Chanchal has been arrested. He was present in court. The remaining four suspects are absconding.
They are former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former ADC of Khilgaon Zone Md Rashedul Islam, former chief of Rampura Police Station Md Mashiur Rahman and former sub-inspector of Rampura Police Station Tariqul Islam Bhuiyan.
A verdict date in the case was initially set for Mar 4. It, however, was postponed when the prosecution petitioned to submit new “digital evidence”. As a result, Amir Hossain, who had testified as the first witness in the case, had to testify again.
On Aug 7 last year, the prosecution filed a formal complaint against the accused in this case with the tribunal. On Sept 18, the Tribunal-1 ordered the start of the trial by framing formal charges against the five accused.
