Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali has urged businessmen to cooperate with the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) to ensure transparency and fair pricing.
Sazzat made the call during an emergency meeting with traders of Moulvibazar in Old Dhaka on Friday afternoon, a day after a DNCRP team was forced to abandon a drive due to protests from local traders.
"Businessmen must provide full cooperation when DNCRP magistrates conduct drives," the DMP chief said following the meeting.
"This is essential to ensure transparency and keep the prices of essentials within a tolerable limit."
He also warned against food adulteration and urged traders to remain vigilant in maintaining stable prices during the month of Ramadan.
The tension began on Wednesday when a DNCRP team, led by Assistant Director Abdul Jabbar Mondal, conducted a raid at Old Dhaka’s Moulvibazar.
During the drive, officials found that a wholesaler, Dewan Traders, had hiked the price of chickpeas by Tk 5 per kg within just ten days.
When the shop owner failed to provide receipts to justify the price hike and admitted to irregular billing practices, the DNCRP slapped a fine of Tk 5,000 on the business for violating consumer laws.
A trader leader intervened, refusing to pay the fine and instigating other traders to shut down their shops in protest.
Amid the ensuing chaos, the DNCRP team was forced to leave the scene without completing their operation.
