Amid tensions between the armed separatist group Kuki-Chin National Front, or KNF, and law-enforcing agencies, Rev Paksim Bawm has alleged that 3000 Bawm people have fled their homes and taken refuge in India’s Mizoram, leaving nine villages deserted.
The Christian leader made these remarks on Thursday at a peace rally organised by the district council in Bandarban town.
The KNF, also referred to as the "Bawm Party," became infamous following two bank robberies in Ruma and Thanchi in April 2023.
These incidents, allegedly involving KNF operatives, marked the beginning of intensified joint forces' operations in the region.
Speaking at the rally, Paksim detailed the situation: "The villages of Paikhyang Para in the Sadar Union of Rowangchhari Upazila, Olandajan Para in Alekyong Union, Jurpi Para in Paindu Union of Ruma Upazila, Choikhyang Para, Loang Mual Para, Thindle Para, Slopy Para, Paingkhyang Para in Remakre Union, and Saizam Para in Belaichari Upazila of Rangamati bordering Bandarban, are now devoid of Bawm residents."

The KNF issue, coupled with the fear of clashes and ongoing joint force operations, has caused significant disruptions, Paksim said.
He added that some Bawm people fleeing to India faced further challenges, with several reportedly detained by the Arakan Army in Myanmar.
The displacement has directly affected the Bawm community’s agricultural trade, causing financial losses, and indirectly impacted the tourism sector, he added.
Paksim called on KNF members to surrender and reintegrate into society.
The peace rally, which began at Raja’s field and concluded at Bandarban Press Club, drew participation from various communities.
Speakers, including leaders from the Bawm Social Council, Mro Student Social Council, and human rights activists, stressed the need for unity and government support to normalise the situation.
The event culminated in a concert featuring local and guest artists from Chattogram, underscoring the rally’s call for peace and harmony in the region.
