At least two people have died after locals beat suspected thieves in Munshiganj’s Louhajang.

They died while undergoing treatment at the Upazila health xomplex on Wednesday, said Louhaganj Police Station chief Md Monirul Islam.

They were caught by the public and beaten while attempting thefts in the Satgharia area on Tuesday night.

The dead were identified as Sagar, 32, and Sanarul, 34. They belonged to the river nomad community in Goali Mandra on Louhajang.

Locals said Sagar and Sanarul were caught on Tuesday night while attempting to steal electric wires from a clinic in Satgharia. They were allegedly detained along with the stolen cables, and locals beat them. At one stage, the two reportedly confessed to carrying out a series of thefts in different houses in the area.

On Wednesday morning, they were rescued and taken to Louhajang Upazila Health Complex, where they died while undergoing treatment.

Suruj Mia of Satgharia said residents of Haldia Union in Louhajang Upazila and its surrounding areas had long been troubled by the thefts. The matter had even been raised at an Upazila law and order meeting, but locals saw no remedy.

“The thieves kept breaking into houses one after another. They stole electric wires used for connections between houses, water pump cables, even bathroom fittings — whatever they could get, they stole,” he said.

He added that cattle had also been stolen. “The stolen goods were sold in Goali Mandra Palli, widely known in the Upazila as a major drug hub. A market for stolen goods developed there around drug trading.

“People lost their patience amid the ongoing torments caused by the thieves. So, they caught the (suspected thieves) red-handed and beat them.”

OC Monirul said the two suspected thieves who were victims of a mob beating had died.

“Preparations are underway to file a murder case in connection with the incident. The matter will be investigated and appropriate action will be taken,” he said.
