At least 20 people, including the Lalmonirhat district police chief, have been injured while trying to save a suspect from an unruly mob after a child was found dead in Aditmari Upazila.
The attackers also vandalised at least seven government vehicles, including the one designated for the deputy commissioner, in Folimari village of Bhelabari Union Tuesday afternoon.
Officers used sound grenades to disperse the crowd and restore order following the clashes that lasted for three hours.
The body of a 7-year-old was found wrapped in a sack and buried in a corn field in the morning, leading to the arrests of villager Ranjit Kumar and his son Bidhan Chandra Roy.
The victim’s family alleged that the girl, a first-grader, was raped and then strangled to death.
She had been missing since Monday afternoon.
Citing a neighbour, police said Bidhan was seen coming out of the corn field with a spade on Monday evening.
After the body was found, locals stormed Bidhan’s house and beat him up, before police rushed to the scene and took him into custody.
The crowd attacked the law enforcers too.
Upon receiving information, Deputy Commissioner Md Rashedul Hoque Prodhan, the district Superintendent Md Ashaduszaman, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-15 chief Lt Col Mehedi Imam and a specialised police team went there to rescue the first group of police, who were held hostage by the locals.
They, however, were also held hostage.
Police then managed to disperse the attackers after a three-hour rampage.
While leaving the area with the two suspects, however, the law enforcers were pelted with brick chips.
SP Ashaduszaman said the chief of Aditmari Police was withdrawn over the incident.
A case was filed over the child’s death and another is being filed for obstruction in government duties, he added.
