Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has expressed profound grief and heartfelt condolences over the death of former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh.
In a condolence message, Yunus described Singh as a visionary leader, a statesman, and a person of great humility, known for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people of India.
“He will be remembered for his contributions to India's economic transformation,” said the interim prime minister.
The message was shared on his office’s official Facebook page on Friday.
It highlighted Singh as a "close friend" of the Nobel laureate and noted his role in fostering bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh.
Singh, regarded as the architect of India’s liberal economy, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92.
The veteran Indian National Congress politician, who transitioned from economics to politics, served as prime minister for two consecutive terms.
World leaders have paid tribute to Singh, lauding his political vision, integrity, and significant role in India's development.
Yunus said, “Singh’s leadership not only shaped the future of India but also contributed to strengthening the bond of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between Bangladesh and India.”
He praised Singh’s commitment to regional cooperation, highlighting the late leader’s vision and firm dedication to regional peace, prosperity, and advancing South Asian cooperation.
The chief advisor recalled several personal memories with him, including the congratulatory message Singh sent to him upon receiving the Nobel Prize in 2006.
He also reflected on meeting Singh in Delhi in 2007 and being invited to deliver the Prof Hiren Mukerjee Memorial Annual Parliamentary Lecture in 2009.
On behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh, Yunus extended heartfelt condolences to Singh’s family, as well as to the people and government of India.
