Dinajpur, Sep 3 (bdnews24.com)— The Dinajpur Government College authorities have asked the students to vacate dormitories Wednesday afternoon, in the wake of a clash between the Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists last night, leaving at least 30 injured.
The Academic Council of the college came up with the decision to vacate the dormitories in the morning.
"However, examinations will be held on schedule," said college Principal Ahmed Hosne Ara after announcing the decision.
Clashes between the activists of BCL and ICS, student fronts of the ruling Awami League and Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami, respectively, broke out at 11pm on Tuesday night and continued for over an hour. A privately-run male dormitory was also set on fire.
Police had to fire 14 rounds of teargas shells for bringing the situation under control.
Kotwali Police Station Officer in Charge Aslam Iqbal said two of his colleagues were injured in the clashes.
"Police personnel have been deployed at the college to avert any further untoward incident," he added.
BCL President Reazul Islam Raju claimed the ICS activists started pelting stones at their dormitory at 10pm, leading to the clashes.
He claimed five activists of his party were injured in the incident.
On the other hand, Dinajpur city ICS General Secretary Abdul Quayum claimed the BCL activists, aided by the police, attacked the Shibir activists sleeping in their dormitory without any provocation.
He claimed the attack left 25 of their party activists injured.
However, according to general students, simmering tension had gripped the campus following violent clashes between BCL and ICS activists in the Rajshahi University.
They said firemen brought the fire in the adjoining privately-run male dormitory under control.
