Despite widespread media reports and social media discussion, a 22-year-old Bangladeshi student remains missing in Cyprus. Local police claim investigations are continuing.
“As part of the examinations, all technological tools are being utilised to locate the 22-year-old and/or the places he was or visited from the moment he left his place of residence,” Cypriot police said on Friday.
Identified as Shahriar Ahmed Emon, the student has reportedly been missing from his home in the Larnaca region located on the country’s southeastern coast since Jun 12, according to the Cyprus Mail.
“The police also possess other multimedia files that were either located, handed over or received, the authenticity of which is also being investigated,” Cypriot police said in a statement.
Police are in contact with Emon’s father, who also lives abroad, and with local authorities.
Emon left his Oroklini home to start a job at a nearby factory. Later on, he texted his location to a friend. He also messaged his father asking for help before communication stopped, the report adds.

His father later reportedly received several calls while an unknown individual “demanded ransom”.
Local media reports say authorities have checked whether Emon crossed over to the north or left the island, but found no register in the electronic system. They are now examining whether he remains in the Cypriot territory.
Meanwhile, social media users are expressing their frustration over the delay in locating him.
In three Facebook groups called “Study in Cyprus Bangladesh students community CYBD”, “Bangladeshi Community In Cyprus (BCC)” and “Cyprus help BD”, some members claimed that kidnappers are demanding €35,000 for the Bangladeshi student.
They also shared a WhatsApp message with Bangla texts to the effect.
A Philenews report also made the same claim, saying a message reportedly demanded €10,000 to be paid on Sunday and €25,000 on Monday.
