Green papaya price has eased back to Tk 30 a kg at Segunbagicha kitchen market in Dhaka after costing a lot more for nearly three months.
The vegetable was selling for Tk 50 a kg in several markets last week. Its price began climbing at the start of Ramadan, reaching Tk 100 within two weeks. It stayed high for about two months before falling to Tk 60 ahead of Eid-ul-Azha in late May.
“This week, papaya is Tk 30 a kg,” said Ayub Hossain, a trader at Segunbagicha kitchen market.
At Motijheel Colony Market, however, green papaya was selling for Tk 40 a kg.
Three weeks after Eid-ul-Azha, beef shops have fully reopened, while supplies of fish and chicken have also improved in Dhaka’s kitchen markets.
Broiler chicken and beef prices have eased slightly as demand remains subdued. With vegetable supplies rising, most prices remained close to last week’s levels.
A visit to Jatrabari Kajla, Motijheel AGB Colony Market and Segunbagicha kitchen market on Friday found prices lower for green chillies, snake gourd, cucumber and aubergine. Most other vegetables were unchanged.

Vegetables Steady, Some Prices Fall
At Jatrabari Kajla, local cucumbers were selling for Tk 50 a kg, while hybrid cucumbers were Tk 40. Last week, local cucumbers sold for Tk 70 and hybrid cucumbers for Tk 50 to Tk 60.
At the same market and Motijheel Colony Market, pumpkin slices were selling unchanged at Tk 30 each, while ridge gourd was Tk 60 a kg.
Snake gourd fell sharply at Motijheel Colony Market, dropping to Tk 40 a kg from Tk 80 last week.
Sponge gourd was selling for Tk 60 a kg at Segunbagicha, unchanged from last week, but cost Tk 80 at Motijheel AGB Colony Market.
Spiny gourd remained at Tk 60 a kg in both markets.
At Segunbagicha, bitter gourd sold for Tk 60 a kg, while another variety fell by Tk 10 to Tk 50.
Across the three markets, yardlong beans were selling for Tk 80 a kg, okra for Tk 30 and pointed gourd for Tk 40. Last week, yardlong beans were Tk 80, while pointed gourd and okra were Tk 50.
At Motijheel AGB Colony Market, pointed gourd from Manikganj sold for Tk 60 a kg, while bitter gourd was Tk 100.
Long aubergines were selling for Tk 60 a kg at Jatrabari Kajla, but Tk 80 at Motijheel Colony Market. Round aubergines sold for Tk 100 a kg, up from Tk 90 last week.
Ash gourd remained unchanged at Tk 40 each at Motijheel Colony Market.
Green chillies fell by Tk 40 to Tk 80 a kg at the same market.
At Segunbagicha, eggs were selling at Tk 130 a dozen, unchanged from last week, according to trader Mohammad Atik.
Potatoes were selling for Tk 30 a kg, while vendors on vans were selling five kilograms for Tk 100.
Onions remained at Tk 40 a kg, while garlic fell by Tk 20 to Tk 80.

Chicken, Beef Shops Reopen Fully
Three weeks after Eid-ul-Azha, chicken and beef shops in the capital’s markets have resumed normal business.
With demand yet to recover fully, broiler chicken and beef were selling for less than last week.
Beef was selling for Tk 780 a kg in Jatrabari, while butcher Khokon was selling it for Tk 800 at Segunbagicha kitchen market. Last week, beef sold for Tk 850 a kg.
At Segunbagicha, trader Mohammad Ariful said broiler chicken was selling for Tk 180 a kg.
The same chicken sold for Tk 170 a kg at Motijheel AGB Colony Market and Jatrabari Kazla. Last week, after Eid, broiler chicken sold for Tk 190 to Tk 200.
Sonali chicken remained unchanged across the three markets at Tk 380 to Tk 400 a kg.

Fish Supply Rises
Fish demand has started to rise as household stocks of Eid meat run low and hot weather returns. Supplies of almost all varieties of fish have improved.
At Motijheel AGB Colony Market, trader Anis Sarkar said eggless rohu (rui) weighing about two kilograms was selling for Tk 450 a kg.
He was selling 1 kg eggless rohu for Tk 420 a kg. Last week, rohu weighing more than two kg sold for Tk 460 to Tk 480.
At Jatrabari Kajla, rohu with eggs weighing around one kilogram was selling unchanged at Tk 350 a kg. Smaller rohu, weighing less than one kilogram, remained at Tk 260 to Tk 280.
At Motijheel AGB Colony Market, pangas sold for Tk 180 to Tk 200 a kg, unchanged from last week.
Small tilapia was Tk 130 a kg, while larger tilapia remained at Tk 200 to Tk 220.
Tengra rose to Tk 600 a kg from Tk 500 last week.
Farmed pabda increased by Tk 50 to Tk 350 a kg, while local pabda stayed unchanged at Tk 500.
Different varieties of koi sold for Tk 400 to Tk 500 a kg, compared with Tk 400 to Tk 450 last week.
Farmed shing rose to Tk 300 a kg from Tk 250.
At Segunbagicha, silver carp and sarputi were selling unchanged at Tk 200 a kg. In Jatrabari, mola fish also remained at Tk 200.
