A Dhaka court has sentenced a former Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) official to five years' rigorous imprisonment for taking a bribe more than six years ago.
Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun of the Dhaka's 5th Special Judges’ Court delivered the verdict on Thursday against HM Rashed Sarkar, who served as a junior license inspector and consultant at CAAB at the time.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Md Zahirul Islam said the court also fined him Tk 100,000.
He will have to serve another six months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.
The court ordered that the fine be paid to the complainant.
Rashed, who had been out on bail, appeared before the court ahead of the verdict.
He was taken to jail after the court issued the conviction warrant.
According to the case, Rakib Hasan passed the first-stage Air Law examination for a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) in 2018.
He applied for the next-stage Composite examination on Sept 2, 2019, after depositing Tk 4,000.
Rashed, then serving as a junior licence inspector and consultant at CAAB, cancelled the application through the online system.
He later demanded Tk 100,000 from Rakib over the phone in exchange for allowing him to sit the Composite examination.
Rakib handed over the money to Rashed at a BFC outlet in Uttara's Sector 13 on Dec 6.
Members of an ACC trap team arrested him while taking the bribe.
The same day, ACC Assistant Director Tahasin Monabil filed a case with the commission's Integrated District Office-1.
After completing the investigation, ACC Deputy Director Zahid Kalam submitted the chargesheet to the court on Jun 6, 2022.
The court framed charges against the accused on Mar 6, 2023, formally opening the trial.
During the proceedings, the court heard testimony from 23 of the 24 prosecution witnesses.
Rashed also testified in his own defence before the court delivered the verdict on Thursday after hearing final arguments.
