The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has shown former Madaripur-3 MP Abdus Sobhan Mia Golap arrested in a case of crimes against humanity filed over a murder in Madaripur during the July Uprising.
A bench headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, chairman of the International Crimes Tribunal-2, issued the order on Monday after accepting the prosecution's application.
The former MP was brought to the tribunal in a prison van from jail on Monday morning.
Prosecutor Faruk Ahmed represented the prosecution in court.
He requested that the Awami League leader be shown arrested in a case of crimes against humanity filed in connection with the Madaripur killing.
After the hearing, the tribunal ordered him to be arrested and sent to jail.
The next hearing of the case was set for May 4.
After the fall of the Awami League government, police arrested Golap from a house in Dhaka’s Nakhalpara on Aug 25, 2024. Since then, he has been in jail after being shown arrested in various cases.
Golap was elected as a member of parliament from Madaripur-3 constituency in the 11th general election. He also served as a special assistant to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina for a long time with the rank of secretary.
In the 12th parliamentary election on Jan 7, the Awami League leader was defeated by his fellow party member Tahmina Begum, who did not get the Awami League nomination but ran as an independent candidate.
