A court has ordered Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, the spokesman for the Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, to be shown arrested in the murder case of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif in Chattogram.
Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate SM Alauddin issued the order on Monday after a hearing.
Chinmoy was present at the court virtually for the hearing.
Chattogram Metropolitan Court Assistant Public Prosecutor Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury said the court ordered to show Chinmoy arrested in the case after the hearing.
On Sunday, police had petitioned to show Chinmoy arrested in four cases, including the Alif murder case, a case over obstructing police work, and over an attacking lawyers and petitioners.
The murder case hearing was scheduled on Monday, while the remaining three cases will be heard on Tuesday, Assistant PP Raihanul said.
Chinmoy was arrested on Nov 25 from Dhaka in a sedition case over disrespecting the Bangladeshi flag.
The High Court granted permanent bail to him on Wednesday after a final hearing.
The state sought a stay of the bail order on the same day. The hearing on the petition was due on Sunday at the Chamber Court.
However, the Supreme Court halted all judicial procedures in the afternoon to pay respects to the passing of senior lawyer MI Farooki. The hearing of Chinmoy’s bail order was not conducted.
Meanwhile, the investigating officer in the Alif murder case petitioned the Chattogram court on Sunday to show Chinmoy arrested in the case. The petition said, “Evidence and signs show that Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari is involved in the murder case and it is necessary to show him arrested in the case.”
Assistant PP Raihanul told bdnews24.com, “Suspect Chinmoy Krishna Das was connected virtually and identified. We, the state counsels, presented our statement showing the necessity for his arrest. Later, the court issued an order to show the suspect arrested.”
On Nov 26, Chattogram's 6th Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam rejected Chinmoy's bail application in the sedition case and sent him to jail.
The decision angered members of the Hindu community, who staged a protest around the prison van outside the court.
The protest lasted for around two and a half hours before police used stun grenades to disperse the crowd before taking Chinmoy into custody.
During the protest, several motorcycles and vehicles parked on the court road were damaged. A scuffle also broke out between lawyers and protesters. In the ensuing chaos, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was killed on the Rangam Convention Hall road.
Alif’s father Jamal Uddin filed a murder case on Nov 29 with the Chattogram Kotwali Police Station over his death, naming 31 suspects and 15-16 unidentified suspects.
Khane Alam, Alif’s brother, filed another case naming 116 people alleging an attack on lawyers, explosions and vandalism.
Police filed another three cases over the clashes, vandalism, and the obstruction of police work on the court premises. As many as 76 suspects and 1,400 unidentified people were named in those three cases.
Lastly, on Dec 3, one person called Mohammad Ullah filed a case naming 29 people, including a ward councillor and Awami League leaders, over the violence in the court premises.
As of now, police have arrested 21 people in the Alif murder case. Among the arrestees, Chandan Das, Rajib Bhattacharya, and Ripon Das gave confessional statements, police said.
