More than 312,000 candidates are sitting for the written MCQ-based 49th Special Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examinations for appointments to 683 teachers’ posts at government colleges.

The exams are to be held from 10am to 12pm on Friday at 184 centres in Dhaka. About 460 students are competing for each post up for grabs.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) says those who pass the written examination will begin taking their viva (oral) examinations from Oct 26.

PSC spokesman SM Matiur Rahman told bdnews24.com on Thursday night: “All preparations have been made for the exam. A total of 312,752 candidates applied for the BCS recruiting teachers to government colleges. Accordingly, about 460 people are competing for each post.”

According to instructions, the entrance gates of the exam centres will close at 9:30am. Candidate are completely prohibited from bringing books, all types of watches, mobile phones, calculators, all types of electronic devices, bank cards, any devices similar to credit cards, jewellery and bags into the centre.

Admission cards will be verified and searched with the help of metal detectors in the presence of executive magistrates and police.

Candidates must listen carefully for instructions at exam centres. If a candidate requires a hearing aid, they must carry a recommendation from a specialist when entering the centre and have received the prior approval of the PSC.

Candidates with disabilities may take the assistance of a dictation writer nominated by the commission. For visually impaired candidates, an additional 20 minutes will be provided for dictation. Candidates with other disabilities will get an extra 10 minutes.

The PSC issued a notification on Jul 21 for the recruitment of teachers through this BCS. Applications were open from Jul 22 to Aug 22.
