Showers brought on by the monsoon winds have heralded the last week of the summer and the start of the rainy season in different parts of Bangladesh.
Rainfall was recorded in different parts of the Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Sylhet, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions on Wednesday, said Meteorologist Md Tariful Newaz Kabir of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
Pointing out that the influence of the southwest monsoon has brought on the rainy season, he told bdnews24.com in the afternoon: "The southwest monsoon has advanced up to the Barishal, Chattogram, Sylhet, Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions.
“The monsoon season has practically arrived in these areas. The monsoon is in a favourable condition to spread to the rest of Bangladesh over the next two to three days."
"The monsoon is causing rain in different parts of the country, which has lowered temperatures slightly. As a result, the heatwave that lasted from the last week of May until last Monday has ended.
“As long as the rain continues, there will be somewhat less heat. However, due to high humidity in the air, it will still feel uncomfortably hot at certain times."
The Met Office reported about 30mm of rainfall recorded in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.
It forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds and lightning in many places in the Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and some places in the Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal divisions on Wednesday and moderately heavy to heavy rain at some places.
The forecast says that the day temperature may decrease slightly in the southern parts of the country, but may remain largely unchanged elsewhere. The night temperature may increase slightly across the country.
The BMD said the highest temperature recorded in the 24 hours to 6am on Wednesday was 37.2 degrees Celsius in Jashore.
The lowest temperature in the country during this time was in Ramgati, Lakshmipur, at 23 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, the most rainfall was in Patuakhali’s Khepupara with 106mm.
On Thursday, the BMD light to moderate rain or thundershowers with gusty winds and lightning in many places in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and some places in the Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions, and moderately heavy to heavy rainfall in some places.
The Met Office has also said that the day and night temperatures across the country may remain largely unchanged on this day.
