The government has announced emergency overnight accommodation for passengers whose flights from Bangladesh were cancelled due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment issued a statement on Saturday night, requesting affected travellers to contact the expatriate welfare desks or lounges at the airport for assistance.
"Due to the situation in the Middle East, some flights have been cancelled, causing unexpected inconvenience to honoured passengers. Accommodation will be provided to those affected," the ministry said.
All Middle East-bound flights from Bangladesh have been suspended until further notice following renewed hostilities involving Iran, the United States and Israel, an official at Shahjalal International Airport said earlier.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines spokesperson Boshra Islam said all flights to Middle Eastern destinations had been halted and details would be announced later.
Passengers travelling to Dammam, Kuwait, Dubai, Jeddah, Madinah, Riyadh, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi have been advised not to come to the airport without contacting Biman first.
The airline’s hotline number is 13636.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh said airspace in several countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Dubai and Qatar, had been temporarily closed following Israeli strikes on Iran, raising regional security risks.
As a result, several scheduled commercial flights on those routes have been cancelled, delayed or rescheduled, the authority said.
The escalation began after joint US-Israeli strikes targeted multiple locations in Iran, including Tehran, prompting retaliatory Iranian attacks on US bases in the region.
