Seven members of the same family, including two children and a pregnant woman, have been injured after a gas leak triggered a fire that gutted their tin-roofed home in Dhaka’s Agargaon.

The fire broke out around 4:30am on Saturday at the home in a government quarters near Agargaon Paka Market Road.

All seven victims were taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), according to Inspector Md Faruk, chief of the DMCH Police Outpost.

Faruk said the family reported smelling gas in the house before the fire, adding: “They told us the fire was sparked by a gas line leak.

The victims have been identified as Abdul Jalil Mia, 50, his wife Arneja Begum, 40, their sons Asif, 19, and Sakib, 16, Asif’s wife Monira, 17, and Jalil’s granddaughters Eva and Isha, both aged six.

The family is originally from Sherpur’s Nalitabari Upazila and had been renting the home at the government quarters.

Doctors say Jalil and Arneja suffered burns on 12 percent and 10 percent of their bodies, respectively. The others suffered burns mainly to their hands and feet.

Monira, who is eight months pregnant, was transferred to the Gynaecology Department after initial treatment.

Jalil’s son-in-law Arfan Mia, who rushed the injured to hospital, said the fire erupted when Arneja lit a match in the kitchen at dawn.

“The flames spread through the tin-roofed house immediately, burning everyone inside,” he added.

Arfan and his wife escaped uninjured as they were sleeping in another room. Their two daughters, Eva and Isha, were with their grandparents and were among those injured.

Asif said the family had been detecting a gas-like smell in the house for more than a month and had repeatedly alerted their landlord but no repairs were made.

The Fire Service said it had not been called to the scene.

“We saw reports on television but no one informed us,” duty officer Lima Khanom said.
