A case has been filed in Tangail against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 192 others, accusing them of rigging votes and organising a “dummy election” in 2024.
Along with the 193 named individuals, the complaint also accuses 150-200 unidentified people.
Among those named in the case, filed on Monday, are the former home minister and agriculture minister, former MP for Tangail-2, and the former chief election commissioner.
It also accused the former inspector general of police, former deputy commissioner, as well as police officers, presiding officers, and activists of the now-banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
According to the case statement, plaintiff Kamrul Hasan went to cast his vote on Jan 7, 2024, when he was allegedly attacked by armed members of the Awami League and its student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League. He claims to have been physically assaulted and threatened with death.
The complaint further alleges that Awami League activists, with the assistance of police and presiding officers, forcibly took control of polling stations, stamped ballot papers in favour of the party’s “boat” symbol, and stuffed the ballot boxes with fake votes.
This led to Tanvir Hasan Chhoto Monir’s election as MP for Tangail-2.
Kamrul claims that these actions caused significant harm to the country and its people.
According to Kamrul’s lawyer, the case has been accepted by the Bhuiyanpur Magistrates’ Court, which then instructed the chief of Bhuiyanpur Police Station to investigate the matter and submit a report.
The next hearing has been scheduled for Aug 13.
