A young man has been shot dead and four others wounded in a clash between two rival groups fighting over turf in Narsingdi's Raipura Upazila.

The incident has left the area on edge.

The clash broke out in Dorigaon village of Nilakhya Union on Tuesday morning, Additional Superintendent of Police Sujan Chandra Sarker said.

The victim, identified only as Anik, 20, was from Dorigaon Purbo Para village.

Police and witnesses said the root of the latest bloodshed dates back to Dec 8, 2025, when a migrant worker, identified with single name as Mamun, a supporter of the local “Mister Group”, was shot dead during a clash with followers of a local union council member Joba Member.

Since then, Joba and his associate Alal Munshi -- both accused in the murder case -- have been on the run, along with their supporters.

The group had repeatedly tried to re-enter the area with hired men.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Joba and his supporters arrived by speedboat with armed hired men and launched an attack.

“Mister Group” members moved to resist them, and in the ensuing clash Anik was shot in the head. Four others were also wounded.

Locals rushed Anik first to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The area has remained tense since.

Additional SP Sujan said law enforcers, including police, had been deployed in the area following the incident and the situation was now under control.
