Dhaka, Sep 10 (bdnews24)—Telecoms regulator BTRC Chairman Zia Ahmed was buried at Banani after he died on Monday of a heart attack aged 59.
Doctors at United Hospital declared him dead around 3:30 in the morning, Ahsan Habib Khan, a Director General at Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, told bdnews24.com.
Ahmed, a retired Major General, took helm of the watchdog of Bangladesh's multi-billion dollar telecoms market in February 2009 for three years. His contract was extended by another year this year.
He was retired by the BNP-led government as a Brigadier General. The ruling Awami League-led government promoted Ahmed, along with many others, to Major General in 2009 with retroactive effect.
Ahmed had served in Bangladesh Army's Signals Corps since his commission in 1975 and in a number of high-profile positions.
He served in Mozambique as a member of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force. After his retirement from the Army, he worked as a consultant to many Information and Communication Technology-oriented organisations.
Janaza and burial
Ahmed's body was taken to his Baridhara DOHS residence from the hospital, DG Khan told bdnews24.com.
His first namaz-e-janaza took place at Dhaka Cantonment's Garrison Mosque and a second at Baridhara DOHS Mosque before he was buried at the Banani Army Graveyard in the evening.
