BNP-backed councillor candidates win five wards in Chittagong

Five BNP leaders have been elected councillors of Chittagong City Corporation, although the party had pulled out midway through the polling in Tuesday’s civic elections, alleging gross fraud.

A candidate won a councillor post that was reserved for women in Chittagong with the support of the BNP’s closest ally, the Jamaat-e-Islami.

The BNP-backed candidates also won in two other wards reserved for women.  

Results in all 41 wards for general councillors have been declared.

In these wards, 36 ruling Awami League-backed candidates have won.

 

A contestant with no support from any political party also won a councillor post reserved for women.

Of the 14 councillor posts reserved for women in Chittagong, Awami League-backed candidates won 10, BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami-endorsed candidates three seats and a candidate with no party backing won one seat. 

Voting was held in the two city corporations in Dhaka and another in Chittagong on Tuesday.

 

In Chittagong, the winning BNP-backed candidates are Mohammad Ajam of ward-5 in Mohra (9,392 votes), AKM Zafrul Islam of ward-17 in West Baklia (10,572), Easin Chowdhury Asu of ward-19 at South Baklia (5,657), Mohammad Ismail Bali of ward-34 at Patharghata (5,233) and Mohammad Abul Hashem of ward-26 at North Halishahar (7,318 votes).

 

Jamaat-backed Mosammat Farzana Parvin (33,105 votes) of ward-6 won the councillor seat reserved for women.

 

Awami League-backed winners of general councillor posts are Toufique Ahmad Chowdhury of ward-1 at South Pahartali (9,666 votes), Mohammad Shahed Iqbal Babu of ward-2 at Jalalabad (8,652), Kafil Uddin Khan of ward-3 at Panchlaish (8,451), Mohammad Saifuddin Khaled of ward-4 at Chandgaon (12,487), M Ashraful Alam of ward-6 at East Sholoshahar (7,668), Mobabar Ali of ward-7 at West Sholoshahar (17,102), Morshedul Alam of ward-8 at Shulkabahar (10,345), Morshed Akter Chowdhury of ward-11 at South Kattali (13,747), Saber Ahmed of ward-12 at Saraiparha (9,636) F Kabir Ahmed Manik of ward-14 at Lalkhan Bazar (9,227) and Gias Uddin of ward-15 at Bagmoniram (15,711).

 

The other ruling party-endorsed general councillor post winners are Syed Golam Haider Mintu of ward-16 at Chawk Bazar (6,909), Mohammad Harun-ur-Rashid of ward-18 at East Baklia (9,781), Chowdhury Hasan Mahmud Hasni of ward-20 at Dewan Bazar (7,543). Shoibal Das Sumon of ward-21 at Jamalkhan (6,687), Salimullah Bachchu of ward-22 at Enayet Bazar (6,596) and Mohammad Jabed of ward-23 at Patanthuli (8,690).

 

Nazmul Haque Dew of ward-24 at North Agrabad (13,681 votes), Mohammad Abdul Kader of ward-28 at Patanthuli (10,141), Golam Mohammad Zobayer of ward-29 at West Madarbarhi (6,622), Mazharul Islam Chowdhury of ward-30 at East Madarbarhi (3,689), Tarek Solaiman Selim of ward-31 at Alkaran (7,543), Jahar Lal Hazari of ward-32 at Andarkilla (10,070), Hasan Murad Biplob of ward-33 at Firingi Bazar (4,746), Hajji Nurul Haque of ward-35 at Bokshirhat (3,867), Mohammad Habibul Haque of ward-36 at Gosaildanga (5,168), Ziaul Haque Sumon of ward-39 at South Halishahar (24,984), Hajji Mohammad Zainal Abedin of ward-40 (13,751) and Saleh Ahmed Chowdhury of ward-41 at South Patenga (11,546 votes) are also Awami League-endorsed councillor posts winners.

Councillor candidates HM Sohel of ward-27 at South Agrabad (10,782), Mazharul Islam of ward-30 (3,869), Mohammad Shafiul Alam of ward-37 at Mid-North Halishahar (3,979) and Golam Mohammad Chowdhury of ward-38 at Mid-South Halishahar (18,997) also won with the backing of the ruling party.

 

In the wards reserved for women, Awami League-backed Syeda Kashfia Nahrin Disha of ward-1 (36,671 votes), Zobaira Nargis Khan of ward-2 (24,022), Jasmine Parvin Jessy of ward-3 (19,313), Abida Azad of ward-4 (22,104), Anjuman Ara Begum of ward-7 (14,648), Nilu Nag of ward-8 (18,725), Farhana Jabed of ward-9 (42,845), Afroza Kalam of ward-12 (41,551), Lutfunnesa Dovash Baby of ward-13 (19,854 votes) and Shahnur Begum of ward-14 (58,722) won.

Besides, Monoara Begum Moni of ward-5 (29,802) and Jesmina Khanam of ward-10 (22,370) won the councillor posts of the wards reserved for women with BNP support.

 

In the ward-11 reserved for women, Ferdousi Akbar (12,177), contesting without political support, won.
