British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke has met with Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, commending his first year in office and promising UK support to strengthen the judiciary.
The courtesy call took place at the Chief Justice’s Office, where the two discussed different aspects of the judiciary, the Supreme Court said in a statement on Tuesday.
Cooke praised Justice Refaat’s roadmap for an independent and impartial judiciary, the introduction of 12 directives to bring greater transparency to judicial services, and the capacity test launched to ensure proper legal aid for defendants.
She also highlighted his efforts to push for a law on judge appointments through a Supreme Judicial Appointments Council, the establishment of a Supreme Court helpline for litigants, and initiatives to strengthen the capacity of lower courts.
Describing the measures as “timely and effective”, Cooke said they represented important steps toward improving good governance and access to justice.
She expressed confidence that the chief justice’s leadership would continue to play a decisive role in safeguarding justice in Bangladesh.
Chief Justice Refaat outlined the measures he has undertaken during his first year to advance reform and improve services for litigants.
