Dhaka, Feb 22 (bdnews24.com) – bdnews24.com correspondent Moinul Hoque Chowdhury received the Canadian Award for Excellence in Bangladeshi Journalism-2010 on Tuesday for reporting on the environment and impact of climate change.
Chowdhury was awarded for a Dec 8 2009 report titled
, under the 'best from a news agency' category.
Five other newspaper and television journalists also received the award in their respective categories for their reporting on the environment, impact of and adaptation to climate change in Bangladesh.
They are Rahual Raha of ATN Bangla, Borhanul Haq Shamrat of Desh TV, Rafiqul Islam Mantu of the daily Samakal, Abul Kalam Azad of the daily Naya Diganta and Hasan Shantonu of the daily Amardesh.
Foreign minister Dipu Moni handed over the awards to the winners on Tuesday morning at the National Press Club in the capital.
"Bangladesh is one of the most risk-prone countries to climate change and so such reports must be broadcast to create public awareness about the impacts," she said.
The award is jointly offered by the Bangladesh Centre for Development, Journalism and Communication (BCDJC) and the High Commission of Canada to Bangladesh. Charge d'affaires of the Canadian ministry and BCDJC president Nayeemul Islam Khan were also present at the award-giving ceremony.
Moinul Hoque Chowdhury won the Disaster Management Media Award'07 for a five-part report titled 'Climate change and vulnerable Bangladesh'.
Starting his career as a Dhaka University correspondent, Chowdhury has also worked for the dailies Arthonitee, Ajker Kagoj and Inquilab.
He has a masters degree in environmental science from Dhaka University.
