The wife and eldest son of a former expatriate in Chattogram’s Rangunia have confessed to his murder and the subsequent scrubbing of their home to destroy evidence following their arrest.

The suspects, identified as Rohima, 35, identified with a single name, and her 18-year-old son, Robiul Hasan Rakib, were apprehended in North Padua village early on Friday.

Following their arrest, the duo provided statements under Section 164 in court on Friday afternoon, admitting to the fatal assault on 40-year-old Alamgir, also identified with a single name.

Alamgir passed away at Chittagong Medical College Hospital on Apr 28, a day after he was wounded at his residence.

South Rangunia Police chief Hilal Uddin told bdnews24.com that the family initially attempted to mislead neighbours by claiming unidentified assailants had attacked Alamgir outside his home.

"Neighbours reported seeing blood inside the house, yet we found the floors suspiciously clean," Hilal said.

"Our suspicions grew when we realised the indoor stains had been intentionally erased. During interrogation after their arrest, Rohima and Rakib admitted to the homicide."

The investigation revealed a history of marital strife that escalated after Alamgir returned from abroad eight months ago.

On the night of Apr 27, a dispute erupted over Rohima’s mobile phone usage.

After Alamgir smashed one of her phones, he attempted to seize a second device from their younger son.

When Alamgir turned violent toward the child, Rakib intervened, striking his father from behind with a sharp weapon.
