The border guards of Bangladesh and India have held a flag meeting following a day of heightened tension and conflicts between residents along the Chapainawabganj border.
The tensions were triggered by a clash between the citizens of the two countries over the cutting of trees and a bomb explosion.
Shibganj Police Station chief Golam Kibria said the clash had occurred along the frontier between Chowka and Kiranganj BGB border outposts in Binodpur union of the district’s Shibganj Upazila since Saturday afternoon.
The flag meeting was later held between the Border Guard Bangladesh, or BGB, and the Indian Border Security Force, or BSF, at 4pm.
Lt Col Golam Kibria, captain of 59th BGB's Rohanpur Battalion, said the BSF had expressed regrets and promised to take action in the meeting.
The situation came under control, he told the media at 9pm.
However, anxiety persists in the area with several injured from the day's conflicts.
Asked about the origin of the incident, Sumon Reza, a young journalist from Biswanathpur village near the border, told the media that the Indian residents claimed that Bangladeshis had harvested green wheat from a field along the border in the Bowbazar area of Kiranganj. The Indians then entered the Bangladesh border and cut down several mango trees in the frontier field.
Hundreds of people gathered at the Bangladesh border and started protesting against the incident. On the other hand, several thousands of Indians also massed at the border.
Sumon said, "At that time, the Indians threw stones, hurled sickles, and detonated crude bombs, triggering a scuffle, clashes, and running battles between the people of the two countries."
Binodpur union council member Md Badsha said Faruk and Sujon, both identified with single names from Kaliganj village, were injured in the stones hurled by Indians. Md Rony from Biswanathpur village suffered sickle wounds alongside Mesbaul Haque Mesbah from Kaliganj Namo Tola village.
Border forces from both nations remain vigilant, aiming to restore peace among the border communities.
