The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has uncovered evidence of “suspicious transactions” worth Tk 1.27 billion in bank accounts linked to Faisal Karim Masud, key suspect in the murder of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, and his associates.
In a Sunday press note, the CID said it has launched an investigation into possible money laundering.
The disclosures were made after reviewing records provided by different law-enforcing and intelligence agencies.
While investigating the case, authorities arrested several individuals and obtained bank cheque books, which the CID has carefully examined, the statement said.
It added that these records reveal different amounts in accounts linked to the suspect and related organisations. The total value of pending transactions reaches approximately Tk 2.18 billion.
“Preliminary analysis indicates that more than Tk 1.27 billion in these accounts involved abnormal movements potentially connected to money laundering, organised crime and terrorist financing,” it said.
The CID is also taking legal steps to confiscate approximately Tk 6.5 million from these accounts for state recovery. Efforts continue to trace the primary sources of the funds, and multiple teams are probing whether a coordinated network facilitated planning, funding, or arms supply for the murder.
On Dec 12, Hadi was attacked while travelling in a rickshaw near the Bijoynagar Water Tank in Dhaka, shot at close range from a motorcycle.
Gravely wounded, he was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, then to Evercare Hospital, and later flown to Singapore on Dec 15, where he died on Thursday.
A case was filed on Dec 14 by Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Manch, naming Faisal and unknown individuals as suspects.
Arrested in connection are Faisal’s father Humayun Kabir, mother Hasi Begum, wife Saheda Parvin Samia, close friend Maria Akter Lima, brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Sipu, car trader Mufti Nuruzzaman Nomani alias Uzzal, Faisal’s associate “Kabir”, Sibyoun Diu, and Sanjay Chisim. Humayun and Hasi have confessed; Nomani has been sent to jail, while the remaining suspects remain on remand.
