The Appellate Division has upheld the High Court’s (HC) bail orders for former Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in 10 separate cases, including on charges of murder.
A bench led by the chief justice dismissed the state’s petitions challenging her bail on Sunday.
Following the order, Ivy’s legal team said there are no further legal barriers to her release from prison.
Senior advocate Md Motahar Hossain Saju, representing Ivy, confirmed the development.
"The Appellate Division's decision means she can now be released," he said.
The state, however, is reportedly preparing to move the Chamber Judge’s court to challenge the bail granted by the HC in two additional cases filed at the Siddhirganj Police Station.
Although Ivy was not named in the initial first information reports of those two cases, she was later shown arrested in them.
Ivy, the country’s first elected female mayor and a three-time NCC leader, was removed from her post by the interim government on Aug 18, 2024, following the fall of the Awami League administration.
On May 9 last year, Ivy was arrested from her residence in Deobhog, Narayanganj. She was initially shown arrested in three murder cases and two attempted murder cases linked to the 2024 July Uprising.
On Nov 9, the HC granted her bail in the five cases. The Chamber Court stayed the bail order on Nov 12.
On the same day she received her first bail, police sought to show her arrested in five more cases, which was granted on Nov 18.
On Feb 26, the HC granted her six months' interim bail in the second set of five cases.
This was also stayed by the Chamber Court on Mar 5.
As the legal battle intensified, police sought to show Ivy arrested in two more murder cases filed at Siddhirganj station, dated Sept 11, 2024, and Jun 30, 2025.
The Narayanganj Chief Judicial Magistrate's court granted these petitions in March and April 2025.
In response to the cycle of arrests, Ivy's lawyers filed a writ petition challenging the validity of the process.
On Apr 26, 2025, the HC directed the authorities not to harass or arrest her in any new cases.
The court also issued a rule asking why the continuous cycle of showing her arrested in new cases should not be declared illegal.
Ivy, who also serves as the senior vice president of the Narayanganj District Awami League, has remained in custody since her arrest in May 2025.
