A pall of grief has descended on the ancestral home of Zamil Ahamed Limon, the Bangladeshi doctoral student at the University of South Florida who was found dead in the United States.

Although no immediate family members now live at the ancestral home in Laldoba village of Karaichara Union in Jamalpur's Madarganj Upazila, his uncle, aunt and other relatives remain there.

Limon, 27, had been missing since last week.

Police recovered his body from the Howard Frankland Bridge in Florida on Friday.

His uncle Ziaul Islam said Limon's father Jahurul Haque moved to Dhaka with his family in 1994.

Since then, they have lived in the capital, though they visited the village from time to time.

Limon passed his SSC from Mawna Multilateral High School in Gazipur in 2014 and his HSC from Birshreshtha Munshi Abdur Rouf Public College in 2016.

He later completed his undergraduate studies at Khulna University before enrolling at the University of South Florida in July 2024 to pursue a PhD.

Limon's aunt Aklima Akter said the family received news of his death on Friday night.

"For the past few days, we only knew he was missing. Last night, we suddenly received news of Limon's death," she said.

"We want my nephew's body to be sent home as quickly as possible. We also want justice for those responsible for killing him," she added.

Limon and another Bangladeshi student Nahida Sultana Bristy went missing about a week ago.

Both were students of the same university.

Limon was conducting research on artificial intelligence in environmental science and was scheduled to defend his doctoral thesis this week.

Bristy was pursuing a doctorate in chemical engineering.

Police said Limon was last seen at his home in Tampa at around 9am on Apr 16.

His family lost contact with him afterwards, and he was later reported missing.

Bristy was last seen at around 10am the same day at the university's Natural and Environmental Sciences building.

Meanwhile, Bristy's brother Zahid Hasan Pranto said in a social media post that his sister was no longer alive, although her body has yet to be recovered.
