On Nov 28, the Ministry of Railways sent a letter to Bangladesh Railway to take necessary measures to change the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone for the bridge in November 2020, and piling work started in March 2021.
The bridge is being built in collaboration with Japan at a cost of Tk 167.81 billion. The Japan International Cooperation Agency, or JICA, is providing 72 percent of the construction cost for the longest dual-gauge double-track in the country.
According to Bangladesh Railway, a total of 7.66km of railway approach embankments and 30.73km of railway lines, including loops and sidings, are being constructed on the bridge, which is about 4.80km long with dual-gauge double-track parallel to Bangabandhu Bridge.
