Flooding in northern Bangladesh to improve over the next three days

Moderate to moderately heavy rainfall is expected over the period in Bangladesh and adjoining upstream areas

The water levels of the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudkhumar rivers in the Rangpur Division have increased over the 24 hours, but are likely to decrease over the following three days, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

The Teesta is flowing 2cm above the danger level at Rangpur’s Kaunia, it said in its regular bulletin on Monday.

The FFWC says the current flooding in the low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, and Kurigram districts is likely to improve gradually over the next 72 hours.

In the past 24 hours, the Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Mymensingh divisions have seen heavy to very heavy rainfall, alongside heavy rainfall in India’s West Bengal and Meghalaya states upstream from Bangladesh.

Panchagarh saw 153mm, Kurigram 142mm, Kurigram’s Pateswari 129mm, Sunamganj’s Moheshkhola 89mm, Rangpur’s Kaunia 73mm, Nilphamari’s Dalia 71mm, and 70mm in Mymensingh and Serajganj.

In the 72 hours from 9am on Monday, moderate to moderately heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Bangladesh and the adjoining upstream Indian states.

The water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers have increased in the past 24 hours. They may continue to rise for the next two days and remain steady for the following three, while flowing below the danger level.

The water level of the Ganges has increased, while the Padma has remained stable. The water levels may continue to rise for the next three days in these rivers and remain steady for another two days, while still flowing below the danger level.

The water levels of the Upper Korotoa–Upper Atrai, Tangon, Punarbhaba, Ghaghot, Atrai, Jamuneswari, and Korotoa rivers in the Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions have increased in the last 24 hours, while the Mahananda River has remained stable. These rivers may continue to rise during the next two days and remain steady on the third day.

The Matamuhuri River in Chattogram Division has also swelled in the past day, while the Gomti, Muhuri, Selonia, and Feni rivers have decreased, and the Halda and Sangu rivers have remained stable. These rivers may rise over the next 24 hours and remain steady during the following two days.

The water levels of the Jinjiram, Someshwari, Bhugai, and Kangsha rivers in Mymensingh Division have increased over the period. These rivers may remain steady for the next day and fall during the following two days.
