Police say they have identified those involved in the daylight killing of a Jubo Dal leader at Chowmuhani Bazar in Chattogram’s Raozan Upazila, but warned that their arrests may take “some time”.
No case had been filed as of Monday noon, two days after the killing. Police said six suspects had been identified, though their names and identities would be disclosed later.
Masudul Haque Chowdhury, 45, senior joint convenor of the Rangunia Upazila unit of the Jubo Dal, was shot dead at Chowmuhani Bazar in Pahartali Union on Saturday afternoon. Videos of the incident have since circulated widely on social media.
Masudul was buried at his village home on Sunday after a post-mortem.
Asked about the incident, Raozan Police Station chief Saiful Islam said: “No member of the victim’s family has come to the police station to file a case yet. We will accept the case once they do.”
“We have identified six people involved in the incident. However, none of them has been arrested so far.”
Asked about the identities of the suspects, the officer said: “We will be able to confirm everything once they are arrested. We will disclose the details after the investigation is fully completed.”
Earlier in the day, journalists asked Chattogram Superintendent of Police Masud Alam about the killing during a press briefing.
“We have all seen the incident on Facebook and other social media platforms,” he said. “We collected all the videos immediately after the incident. We have all of them in our possession.”
“We have identified everyone directly involved in the killing. They are all known criminals from the area. Many of them have been arrested by us before, but they repeatedly secured bail.”
He said the only remaining task was to arrest them.
“We have not been able to arrest them yet. We are making every effort with complete sincerity. However, it may take some time because of the area’s geographical characteristics, which provide advantages to these criminals. They have repeatedly taken advantage of that.”
Masud said law enforcers launched operations immediately after the killing.
“We entered the hill areas that very day and searched many locations. Without specific information, it is extremely difficult,” he said.
“Then we will need Allah’s blessings, some good fortune on our side, and everyone’s cooperation. No matter how influential a criminal may be, there will be no leniency.”
“We want to send a message that no one can commit a crime and get away with it. There is no room for such a belief, and we will not allow it.”
Referring to the suspects, Masud said: “All of them are identified criminals from the surrounding areas, centred around Raozan. They have been arrested many times before and face numerous cases, including murder charges.”
“We suspect they may have been hired by some vested interest. Once we arrest them, we may be able to determine their motive.”
He also noted that the geographical landscape of Raozan, Rangunia, Fatikchhari, Bhujpur and Hathazari offers natural advantages to criminal groups.
“They are taking advantage of those conditions, but they will not be able to do so for long. We will create whatever obstacles are necessary to prevent it.”
Masudul Haque Chowdhury, 45, who was murdered on Saturday, was the senior joint convener of the Rangunia Upazila Jubo Dal.
According to videos shared on social media, the attackers arrived at Chowmuhani Bazar in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw. Masudul was standing near a pharmacy at the time.
The armed men opened fire on him. Even after he fell to the ground, several attackers continued shooting him.
The assailants then fired blank shots into the air before leaving the scene in the same auto-rickshaw. The footage shows three of them carrying pistols, while two others were armed with larger firearms.
Police station chief Saiful had previously said that both pistols and locally made weapons were used in the attack.
Masudul, a resident of Betagi Union in Rangunia, was the brother of former Betagi Union chairman Mohammad Piarul Haque Chowdhury.
Police said he had gone to Chowmuhani Bazar on Saturday afternoon to buy medicine.
Raozan Upazila has witnessed several killings over the past two years.
