The National Consensus Committee will present multiple implementation proposals to the government if political parties do not reach a consensus on the implementation of the July Charter, according to the panel's Vice-Chairman Ali Riaz.
He made the remarks on the fourth day of the dialogue with political parties on implementation methods on Sunday.
"The parties gave six proposals regarding the implementation process. We asked them if they could combine everything into one point after discussing the six processes," said Riaz.
“If the 30 participating parties can agree on one proposal, we will gladly submit it to the interim government and say: this is the proposal that you may consider for implementation.”
He noted that the commission had already conveyed the key points raised during the Sept 16 discussions to a panel of experts, who then provided their advice and clarified earlier positions.
"If you [parties] reach a consensus, it will be easier to implement it. It will be possible to do it quickly," he said, adding that the commission met with its chairman, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, earlier in the day to brief him on the progress.
The chief advisor has urged the work to be carried out swiftly, he said.
"He asked us to consider whether the implementation process, especially the charter, can be made into a political document signed and acceptable to all."
"Today we came to you for one reason only. That is if you have a more specific, clear, and concise proposal for implementation, then we can combine it and present it in various ways to the interim government. We aim to finish the process before the 15th of October.”
He noted that political parties were currently busy with election preparations but said the commission wanted to ensure the process did not interfere with their activities.
“Since our term ends on the 15th of October, we aim to finish before then,” he added.
Riaz said they hope the political parties would present something specific. "If you can collectively make a proposal that goes beyond specific party considerations, we will discuss it. In that context, our goal is that if 30 political parties can come together on a single point today, we will no longer sit with experts. However, we’ll consult the experts again if needed.”
Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor Monir Haider moderated the meeting, with commission members Badiul Alam Majumder, Justice Md Emdadul Haque, Iftekharuzzaman and Md Ayub Mia present.
