Power and Energy Advisor Fouzul Kabir Khan has expressed confidence that Bangladesh will add 1,454MW of solar power to the national grid within February 2026.
The government plans to install solar panels on the rooftops of 46,854 public and educational buildings, significantly boosting the country’s renewable energy capacity and reducing reliance on costly imported fuels.
The project was formalised through an inter-ministerial agreement signed on Tuesday at the Bidyut Bhaban in Dhaka.
This initiative is set to be a cornerstone in Bangladesh's renewable energy efforts.
During the signing ceremony, Fouzul stressed the importance of meeting the deadline for grid integration. "It is essential that this solar power is connected to the grid within February. Any distribution companies failing to meet the target will face stringent penalties.”
He added that the success of the project would directly reflect on the performance of relevant officials. "Should any officials fail to cooperate, they will be held accountable."
The advisor also highlighted the ongoing energy challenges Bangladesh faces, particularly with dwindling domestic gas production.
"Our country is experiencing a steady decrease in gas output, which is a significant concern. While we are importing LNG to fill the gap, the infrastructure and cost challenges make this solution unsustainable," he explained.
Fouzul pointed out that renewable energy, particularly solar power, is key to overcoming the country's energy crisis.
"This programme is not just an option; it's essential for our survival. If we succeed, we will no longer need to depend on expensive electricity sources," he said.
