Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has said the government is prepared to hold fresh Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams at centres where students were unable to sit tests because of flooding or waterlogging.
Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, he urged protesting students to return to their studies.
He said, "There is a provision to hold re-examinations at centres where irregularities occurred."
His remarks came in response to a supplementary question from Jamaat MP Shafiqul Islam Masud of Patuakhali-2, as students across Dhaka and several districts staged demonstrations demanding his resignation over the decision to hold exams during severe weather and over alleged derogatory remarks.
Milon said local administrations had been authorised to relocate exam centres immediately if they became flooded.
Apart from Comilla Government Women's College, no other centre had faced serious disruption, while several centres were shifted promptly to minimise hardship.
He pledged that any candidate unable to sit an exam because of natural disasters or administrative shortcomings would receive a remedy.
"We have suspended exams in several areas and have alternative question papers ready. If necessary, we will hold the examinations again."
Calling on students to end their protests, he said the government was "more concerned than the students" about ensuring fair exams and responding to the disaster.
Earlier, independent MP Rumeen Farhana questioned why the physics exam had not been postponed despite widespread flooding in major cities.
The minister said authorities had monitored weather conditions with police, divisional commissioners, education boards and the Meteorological Department before deciding to proceed.
He also confirmed errors in questions 6 and 7 of the physics paper, saying all candidates would receive full marks for both.
The government is also considering shifting future SSC and HSC examinations to December and January from 2027 to avoid the monsoon season.
