The Election Commission (EC) has warned that sharing photos or videos of postal ballots on social media is a punishable offence and could lead to the suspension of a voter’s national identity card.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commission said legal action may also be taken against those who violate the secrecy of postal voting.
The warning comes as the commission begins distributing postal ballots to registered voters ahead of the 13th parliamentary election, scheduled for Feb 12.
Postal ballots are being sent in phases, and some voters have already received them. Election officials said some recipients have been posting images of their ballots online.
The EC said voters would only be able to cast their ballots after the allocation of election symbols on Jan 21. Ballots can be returned by post from the following day.
Voters have been urged to return their ballots promptly, as those received after the deadline will not be counted.
The ballot paper will include 118 symbols representing registered political parties and independent candidates, excluding the Awami League’s boat symbol. A “No” vote option will also appear on the ballot.
Voters will be able to cast their postal votes by selecting their preferred candidate from constituency-wise lists available on digital platforms and marking their choice on the ballot.
The EC said registration for postal voting remains open through the “Postal Vote BD” app for voters at home and abroad, with the deadline extended to Jan 5 from Dec 31.
More than 1.2 million voters in Bangladesh and overseas had registered for postal voting byJan 3, the commission said.
