A judicial commission formed to investigate the deaths of five people during the National Citizen Party (NCP)'s “July March” in Gopalganj has begun work on the ground.
On Tuesday afternoon, a six-strong team led by retired Supreme Court justice and freedom fighter Md Abu Tariq arrived in Gopalganj from Dhaka to launch the probe.
After visiting the site of the rally, the team held a press briefing at 7pm at the conference room of the deputy commissioner’s office.
The commission’s Member Secretary Khandaker Md Mahbubur Rahman said the final report would be submitted “as soon as possible”.
The panel chief Tariq said, “We have been appointed to investigate this matter. There’s nothing further to announce at this stage. We are carefully examining everything.
“The inquiry is under way and we will deliver the report promptly.”
Upon arrival, the team visited Ulpur in Sadar Upazila, the district jail, the NCP rally venue, and other locations linked to the incident.
They also spoke with several people about the violence.
At the evening briefing, Mahabubur said: “The government has given us specific agendas. We are working to find answers to these in our investigation.
“We will also recommend measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
He noted that the inquiry is still ongoing. “We have recorded initial statements and taken many more [on Tuesday]. We’ll continue gathering statements on Wednesday as well.
“Since this is an active investigation, the report will remain confidential. It will be up to the government to decide if it will be made public. At this stage, we cannot comment on what we’ve found or failed to find,” he added.
