A waste-to-energy power plant in Dhaka is expected to begin supplying 42.5MW of electricity to the national grid from August 2028, Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Advisor Zahed Ur Rahman has said.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Press Information Department (PID) on Tuesday, Zahed said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman recently reviewed two waste-to-energy projects planned for Aminbazar under Dhaka North City Corporation and Matuail under Dhaka South City Corporation.
He said officials informed the meeting, held at the Secretariat on Sunday, that China's CMEC Group would invest in building the waste-based power plant at Aminbazar.
According to Zahed, the facility will process around 3,000 tonnes of waste every day to generate 42.5MW of electricity.
"The target is to begin supplying electricity to the national grid in August 2028," he said, adding that the plant is expected to produce electricity continuously for 25 years.
Zahed also highlighted efforts to modernise urban sanitation and waste management through greater use of technology.
He said Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) had launched a digital waste management system named "Clean Care".
The advisor noted that DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam inaugurated the application at Nagar Bhaban auditorium on Tuesday.
He said the app would allow city residents to submit complaints directly on cleanliness and waste management, which is likely to help authorities resolve issues more quickly.
Zahed also referred to the longstanding poor sanitation along both sides of the highway between Aminbazar and Hemayetpur.
He said the matter had come to the prime minister's attention, prompting instructions to coordinate with the Dhaka Deputy Commissioner's Office to remove waste, improve environmental cleanliness and plant neem saplings along both sides of the highway.
