A Dhaka court has granted police another three days to interrogate Afzal Naser, a former director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), in connection with the murder of Mahamudul Hasan during the July Uprising in 2024.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order for the fourth consecutive spell of questioning of the former army officer, according to Prosecution Police Sub-Inspector Shamim Hossain.
The former lieutenant colonel, who served as a DGFI director from 2006 to 2008, was apprehended by the Detective Branch in Mirpur DOHS in the early hours of Mar 30.
Since his arrest, he has been placed on multiple remands across several murder cases related to the July-August movement and the killing of a BNP activist.
In the current case filed at Uttara East Police Station, Naser had previously undergone nine days of questioning over three separate terms since Apr 23.
The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ashraful Alam, had sought a seven-day extension for further questioning, while defence counsel Helal Uddin moved a petition seeking bail and the cancellation of the remand.
According to the case files, Mahamudul Hasan was shot near the Azampur footbridge in Uttara around 4pm on Aug 5, 2024.
He was later declared dead at Kuwait Maitree Hospital.
The murder case was filed by his family on Sept 26, following the fall of the Awami League government.
