The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered a crimes against humanity case against Jahangir Kabir Nanak and 27 others over nine murders in Mohammadpur during the July Uprising to proceed to trial.
The tribunal set Jun 8 for opening statements and the recording of testimony.
A Tribunal-1 bench led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder indicted the suspects on Sunday. The other bench member was retired district and sessions judge Md Mohitul Enam Chowdhury.
Prosecutor Gazi HM Tamim, Tarek Abdullah, Sahidul Islam Sardar and Abdus Sardar Palowan represented the prosecution at the hearing.
After the hearing, Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam told the media that the brutal murder of teenager Farhan Fayaz in Mohammadpur was part of the “open instructions” to use lethal weapons indiscriminately against students and members of the public during the July Uprising and the public. A total of 28 people, including Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, have been charged in the tribunal for the murder of Fayaz and other incidents on Jul 18 and 19, 2024.
Four suspects in jail custody were produced before the tribunal for Sunday’s hearing. They are Naimul Hasan Rasel, president of the Mohammadpur Thana branch of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, the organisation’s Vice President Sajjad Hossain, Omar Faruk and Fazle Rabbi.
At the hearing, Judge Mohitul read out the three charges brought by the prosecution against the 28 accused. Then, the four accused present in the dock were asked whether they would plead guilty or not. In response, the accused claimed their innocence and prayed for justice from the court.
The three charges brought by the prosecution in the case state that the Awami League, Chhatra League and law enforcing agencies committed atrocities during the student-led mass movement on Jul 18 and Jul 19, 2024. Through the instigating, prompting, and in the direct and indirect presence of the accused, shots were fired at a crowd of innocent students. A total of nine people, including Mahmudur Rahman Saikat and Farhan Fayaz, were killed and many others were seriously injured.
Notable absconding suspects in the case include former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Taposh, then Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman, former additional DIG of police Prolay Kumar Joarder, former joint commissioner of DMP Biplob Kumar Sarkar and former Dhaka North City Corporation Ward No. 32 councillor Syed Hasan Noor Islam Rashtran. The tribunal has arranged a state defence for the absconding suspects.
