More than 150,000 police personnel will be provided special training to ensure a fair and secure national election in February, government officials said on Friday, according to state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Kazi Zia Uddin told BSS, “We will impart all the necessary training to 150,000 or more police personnel to ensure a free, fair, neutral and peaceful national election.”
Zia Uddin, the officer-in-charge of the Human Resources (HR) Development Division, hopes that the upcoming elections will be a “milestone” in the country’s history. He added that his department has prepared nine training modules in the past three months with the advice of election experts and lawyers.
Zia Uddin said the training course prepared under the “dynamic leadership of the IGP (Inspector General of Police) and Additional IGP for HR is wonderful.”
The course will prepare police personnel to successfully deal with any kind of law-and-order situation during the election, he said.
Police have 130 small and four large training centres across the country where police personnel can be trained under the programme.
As part of the election training, Zia Uddin said two documentaries have been produced - a 15-minute piece of audio-visual content and a 9-minute film - as well as a booklet.
The modules have been used to train 150 master trainers in Dhaka from Aug 31-Sept 2, he said. A total of 1,292 master trainers are to be trained at 19 police training centres across the country in the days to come.
These trainers will, in turn, provide training to 150,000 police personnel assigned to poll duty.
"All trainers will be given real-time training through mock situations that may arise during the elections," Zia Uddin said. Exercises are also being carried out to provide blanket security for the polls.
The training programme will be officially inaugurated at a programme at the Rajarbagh Police Lines later in the week, the DIG said.
